My brother applied. Send proof of SS I. Last week requested SS I papers again. Now want receipts for living expenses. And details from last year. I think he included the death certificate that said mom died eight months ago. He didn't pay expenses last year. His income obviously can't pay for the cost of taxes. Why do they need all this information?

Find Care & Housing
He was out on his own for many years before he came back home. He was in subsidized apartment. SSI allows you to have a house as long as you live in it. I found out what the problem was. And now know what information to send them for next year's application.

Hadnuff, there may be an increase in his 2016 income if he inherited a house. I have a feeling he did not declare the support he got from mom over the years, so he could collect SSI and food stamps. I smell trouble ahead.

If taxes are due for this year there's nothing to do but find some way to pay them. I don't think there are any organizations that will help with this specifically. You might be able to inquire at her church for some help. You do need to apply now for exemptions for next year if it isn't too late already. Check online to see what the dates for application for exemption. There are only 2 more days in this year. If the application date for exemption has not already passed, it will pass in two days, so you need to hurry to get this done.

I called today. They said because of his income the system automatically
generated the affidavit letter . He is on SSI and food stamps. It does seem odd
that he owns a home on so little income. But mom didn't die until April of 2016. So mom was paying living expenses for brother. They said to write that in the form and send back. Sure hope they give him the credit without any more problems. He is disabled.

Something I wondered if maybe he didn't file taxes, so didn't have copies of his returns to show them.

Hadnuff, it is a bit confusing. The tax people normally only ask for income tax records (fed and state) for low-income senior citizen exemption. For disability exemption letters from doctors (usually two) are also requested. I've not heard of property tax people being interested in anything other than proving age, income, and disability. Confusing, but I don't know the rules in all places.

I'm going to assume your brother is looking for a property tax exemption for the elderly or disabled? And he is living in mom's house? What expenses did he not pay? Is the tax exemption tied to income?
