We have some savings, our roof needs repair. As my husband's health deteriorates, we’re thinking of a nursing home for him, can I still go ahead and get roof repaired out of his savings? I do have power of attorney. Any advice please

Sonia17, if the house is in both your names, I don't think using his savings will cause a future Medicaid problem. If the house is in just your name, then using his savings for roof repair may or may not result in a future Medicaid penalty, but I don't think it matters because the roof needs repair regardless. If there is a Medicaid penalty, it would be limited to the cost of the repair and you'll be no worse off. So, by all means get the roof repaired, which will be one less thing you and he will have to worry about.

His savings? It's not joint? This is a question for Medicaid. A house needs a roof. I wouldn't rely on HUDD since funds have been slashed. Plus there is money available.

I don't know if you'll be applying for Medicaid, and if so whether the roof cost might impact the application, but you can contact your local community to determine if it gets HUD funds for emergency repairs.
