We got the POA and mom's will done almost 3 years ago. I understood that it was good for 5 years. So what happens when five years is up?

Once a POA expires, and there is no will, what recourse do the children have in retrieving property items within the deceased's home?

No, I may be losing it myself. I am at work but when I get home I will get it out and read it. Thanks for your posts, what you say makes sense.

Unless it was written in the document that it expires on a certain date it expires on the date the person dies. You may want to double check with the attorney who wrote the document. Are you looking at the signatures of the notarized document? That has expiration, but it does not pertain to the POA document itself.

Blessings,

Bridget

I've never heard of a time limit on a POA other than when the person dies. Have you read over the POA lately? The one that I have for my mother, I have had since 2002.
