Most ALF's have a visiting NP or MD, but the patient has to opt for that. Most ALF's also have transportation available, including wheelchair transport if the doctor orders it. We are in the process of giving up MIL's primary and using the ALF's MD services. It makes things a lot easier.

In my area, there is a visiting physicians group - I learned about them at an Area on Aging Expo.

You might contact your local AAA office and ask if they have any information on home physicians. You could also try Googling "visiting physicians" in your area of Maryland.

If you can't find any doctors who make "house calls":

Does the AL facility in which your friend resides have any assistive transportation? I would think it would. Ask about that - a van with a lift would help your friend get in and out, and the family could simply drive to the medical appointment location to meet her.

There are other various private sector transporation sources - vans with lifts - but they are expensive.

You don't mention whether she uses a cane, walker, or a wheelchair. Knowing that would help. If she's in a wheelchair, a slide board will help her get into the car.

Give us a little bit more information, please.
