Hello! So a few years ago my grandmother moved back to an assisted living home, my mom and aunt have been taking care of her. My mom noticed something odd about how no money was going into my grandmas bank account. She hardly has any money in there. We found out from another relative that she gets an extra $2000 a month. My aunt is her POA and claims to be financial fiduciary over her funds. Is there anything we can do? I know she has been stealing her money but its hard to prove.
If yes, then your Grandmother is only allowed to have a small amount in her bank account, and the rest goes to the nursing home, with Medicaid making up the rest of the cost.
Let us know if this is Medicaid. Others on this forum who are more familiar with the ins and outs of Medicaid can give you more information.
Is your grandma on Medicaid? Do you know how that works?
If grandma is on Medicaid- all of her income - minus a very small
personal “allowance” - less than $100 a month, is taken by the facility and Medicaid only pays the difference between the cost of the facility and the amount paid by grandma via her pension, social security and her VA benefit.
The only way any savings - money going into grandmas account would be if her monthly income was more than the $3,300 it costs her to be at the AL facility.
Added via edit: by chance you are meaning that grandma had money in that account but it’s now gone even though she receives Medicaid- that money would have had to go towards the cost of her AL before Medicaid would begin to supplement her costs.
Does she have an annuity or investments that she gets income from each month?
Mom tells you that she is getting $2000 "extra" each month. How is the AL being paid? Does Aunt pay them? Is there an arrangement by which funds are paid directly from her pension to the AL? I have an arrangement like that with my employer; money from my paycheck goes directly to my credit union to pay my car loan. Money also goes directly from my paycheck to my insurance company; those monies NEVER "hit" my bank account.
So, unless grandma's TOTAL income is greater than what it costs her to be at AL, then there is no money missing.
