Hello! I have a bit of a dilemna. My dad lives out of state, and has been staying with me since last December. He's going to return to his home in a week. He suffers from meningioma, in its early stages. His geriatric doctor gave him a capacity exam yesterday. He said that my dad has the capacity to pick who will make his decisions, but little else. Things like self care, medical and financial decisions are out of his reach. This surprised me, as he takes care of his hygiene, and heats up tv dinners, goes to the store and such. I'm concerned about when he returns home, since he lives alone. In addition, he has mobility issues, which are getting worse. While staying with me, actually passed out while standing at a bus station. He had to be carried on to the bus, then he was find. I'm thinking, at minimum, a nurses aid should come by three times a week. Does anyone have other ideas?

PS- It should say "In - home care, senior living alone" Good thing it's Friday! -:)

Um, I would think that if dad has been found not to have capacity for self care, they are saying he needs 24/7 supervision. Please ask the doc to be quite specific about what level of care dad needs. If his answer is confusing to you, ask him if 3 times a week nurses aid is sufficient

The MD is the one who orders the in home care, so the conversation starts with the doctor. Medicare does not cover that unless there is a recent hospital stay. Start by asking the doctor.

You are also able to pick up the phone and call an agency on your own for in-home care. Some take Medicare, some don't. You'll have to do some research but you don't necessarily have to go through the Dr.
