Hi - New to this forum. My mother - aged 75, has recently suffered from a life-changing illness. She was working up until the end of December, but a diagnosis and hospital stay has rendered her homebound and in need of daily care - for now and possibly ongoing. I live in another state but have returned home to help, and my sister and I are trying to manage all the needs right now. We need help with the decision-making process, and I am wondering where to turn to talk to someone with knowledge in eldercare, home health, etc.
And is mom cognizant? If so what does she want going forward?
Does she want to stay home and if so is she willing to have caregivers come in as often as is necessary? that could be anything from a few times a week, to daily, full time or 24/7.
If this is what you plan on doing contact an agency in your area and have an assessment done. Do know that if mom can not physically take medication on her own a "regular" caregiver will not be able to administer medications. if this is the case an agency will require a Nurse or other certified person. This will increase cost.
(If you hire privately you can instruct a caregiver to give medications)
And the next questions is do you or your sister have POA? Do you have the legal authority to make decisions for mom?
A little more info might help...how much help will she need, is she cognizant, is she ambulatory,

What specific needs does your mother have now daily; a diagnosis and prognosis would help us with your questions.
We need a lot of details about what mom can and cannot do, and how much care she now requires.
What paperwork is done. Has she advance directive, POA and Will all done prior to falling ill? Is she capable mentally of doing them now?
On the face of what you are saying it sounds as though mom now may need to enter care. Much of what she can afford in terms of Board and Care or ALF or even Memory Care is quite dependent on her assets.
Also, what specific questions do you have now about your mother's care ongoing.
