I've lived with my grandparents since I was a child because my parents left me when I was 3 years old. Neither me or my grandparents are in contact with my parents anymore. My grandparents raised me and they treated my like their own child. But last week, my grandfather died and now I have to take care of my grandmother because nobody else is helping me. I'm 21, from Spain and had plans on studying but I can't do that anymore because I don't have time for it. My grandfather used to help my grandmother because he could drive and was healthier in general. I didn't expect him to die at all because he was healthy and didn't have problems, thats why I don't know what to do with my life. I have to help her with everything now and can't leave her alone all day. I don't have time for anything anymore and I don't know what to do. I don't have friends or other family members who could help me and my grandmother is all I have left. Contacting my parents is not an option and I don't know what to do when my grandmother leaves this world. My grandfather was like my father and I'm lost right now.
At 21 you need to be living your life, not looking after your grandmother. You need to find out what local support programs there are to care for elders in their home. Start with your doctor's office, contact your clergy if you belong to a church. There will be help available for you.
You may also want to look into a grief support group.
You’ve found a group that cares, but can you help us by filling in a bit of info? What health conditions is your grandmother dealing with that have her requiring full time help? Were you working or attending school before the loss of your grandfather? Is your grandmother of the age to be on Medicare, assuming you’re in the states?
