I’m thinking of transferring her to a rehab she was in for PT for a previous post hospital visit who were delightful, but the PT just wasn’t enough. This time the PT is top notch but the care such as helping with the bathroom lacks all compassion. She asked for help and 2 hours later they brought a commode. Now she’s wet herself and they let her sit in it. I feel it’s unacceptable for a rehab facility. Thoughts? I’m thinking of transferring to the rehab she was at previously.

Find Care & Housing
You need to talk to the Director of nursing. She should get the same care in a Rehab she gets in a SNF. Where I live, they are one and the same, just in different wings.

This was not the case in SE FL where my very eldery Aunt with advanced dementia went after she broke her hip. If it wasn't for her sister and niece going there every day, all day, she wouldn't have been eating or drinking anything or getting help with her hygiene. She passed in the rehab before I could set up alternative care for her.

A rehab facility does not provide the same services and attention as a SNF. You may need to consider hiring a companion aid for her in her current place to take care of her needs. If she isn't drinking enough fluids, or feeding herself sufficiently, this can be a serious problem.

How old is she?

Why is she in rehab?

What will her care situation be when she is released from rehab, if she rehabs sufficiently?

More info would be helpful.

When I worked in home health and saw clients from rehab, they always praised the therapy but often were unhappy with the low staffing which sounds like your situation. That never should have happened of course and is not acceptable. Did you speak to the staff or director about what it? Their response(including improvement in care)should give you a lot of information on whether you want to give them another chance.

If you decide to move her however, make sure she goes to another rehab and not a skilled nursing facility which it sounds like her previous setting may have been. A rehab facility requires three hours of therapy a day whereas a skilled nursing offers much less. Unfortunately, there’s not always a good way to tell if another facility is going to be better. I hope your mom continues to do well in therapy.
