I have all tax documents for her income, and power of attorney. She has been retired for a number of years and now resides in an assisted living in Michigan. I need to file in Oklahoma where I live. Is that ok? Is there any additional information I need to have in order to have her taxes prepared. Thank You.

There are going to be things specific to the state, and you may want to get connected online with an agent from H&R Block or one of the other big companies that has branches where you are and where she is. We used the person who had been doing mom's returns for several years before she went into care and she and Mom both appreciated that. They will be able to do a lot if not all of it by fax and mail, you can sign for her as your name, POA for her name. With all my mom's medical expenses, they typically got her a full refund, and I don't know that I would have been confident of what to deduct and what not to just doing it online myself, but that's your other option.

Her state tax return needs to be for the state she lives in. There is software that you can buy which also comes with state returns that you can purchase and use on your computer. There is always the more expensive way of having a CPA do the returns for you.

Vstefan's is spot on with her answer. H & R Block can do taxes & file from any location for any state. Block was a real godsend for doing taxes for those of us who were displaced from Hurricane Katrina and had to file LA & MS taxes even though we were states away. Now you may have to do this @ a Block office that is a open all year office who does small business services as those who work there are more tax savvy or experience with other states tax nuances. With Block you do have an option to pay a small fee for "piece of mind' service" maybe $ 35.00 for this, which means Block will help you or even go with you if there are issues with the IRS & taxes later on. The costs are set by Block and based on what the forms needed are so it's pretty fair & equitable service. Good luck!
