I applied for VA benefits for my father back in November. He was approved so we should start seeing payments in July. However the retroactive amount was not approved...yet. Anyone ever go through this process? Now I have to have him fill out a form that says he will not contest a finding of incompetency. Then apparently I get interviewed. I realize they are using government funds to do this but does it have to be so difficult? I feel like they make it so hard so some people will give up. The retroactive will cover two months of assisted living so I am not giving up on this. Just wonder if anyone can tell me what to expect next.

I had to do the separate account too. The va rep said I’d have to file a report since the retro payment was over 10k

You will have to pay taxes on that retro amount, you mean? If so, that's really stupid!!! Only the Feds would make things so complicated!!!

The OP wasn’t back because there were no replies. Finally got through the entire process. Only took 11 months.

The process for me was a lot smoother and only took a couple of months. After dad died, however, I had to reapply for mom's survivor benefits which were also approved. They put me through A LOT more aggravation with her, though, by making me open a separate account showing me as Federal Fiduciary and having all the VA $$$ go into that separate account, etc. They now interview me and my mother regularly to make sure she's where I say she is (in Assisted Living) and that I'm using the funds appropriately.

Glad to hear your dad was finally approved!

My mom got the current payments first.  To get the retroactive, my sister had to get approved as  a fiduciary.  May be because my mom had memory issues.   They asked for background information on my sister, and an interview.  Good luck

FloridaDD might want to check the dates before you reply to a post. You are replying to posts from June when the OP hasn’t been back. There are plenty of current posts that need answers :)
