Hi, I’m new here.
My husband has started having issues when he pees, urine gets on the floor. I’m not talking a little spillage, sometimes it’s like he missed the toilet completely. It happens whether he’s standing or sitting. He says he’s making sure he “aims” it in the right direction.
He's 67 and it’s getting him quite depressed. I don’t like how it’s got him so down, but would also like to not have to clean 2 bathrooms daily!
We are both dealing with health issues. He is diabetic and has mobility difficulties. I have chronic back pain and peripheral neuropathy.
Any suggestions on what we can do?
All help is appreciated!

My Dad had a problem where his stream went sideways. Maybe time to see a urologist. And he gets to use one bathroom, the smallest.

I am working on getting him to use only one bathroom, but he can’t always make it. Sometimes the urge gets him and he has to go to the one that’s closest.

Time for hubby to sit when peeing and point south. If that doesn’t work, it may be time for Depends

IDK...maybe he needs to get used to better "aiming while sitting" And i know this sounds ridiculous, but have you recently installed an elevated seat with arms attached. The ones that are not attached to the toilet bowl sometimes down line up with the bowl very well, hence spillage. Also, since he has mobility issues, maybe start heading off to the bathroom before it becomes very urgent so that he has more time to "assess the destination of the aim". Also, how about wearing one of those urine-catching pads? It may help catching. Lastly, maybe it's a vision problem. He thinks he's aiming properly but his vision is a bit off.

First I would limit his bathroom usage to just one bathroom to save you from having to clean 2 bathrooms daily, but then I would make sure that he's sitting every single time and that his penis is tucked in so he can't get his pee anywhere but in the toilet.
And that may mean you following him in to make sure he's doing it correctly.

My late husband only had use of one hand after his stroke and developed essential tremors in his one good hand/arm so he too missed the toilet all the time. and I too had to make sure that he then sat down to pee every time. He didn't like it much at first, but over time got used to it and it became second nature.

I know that you say that he misses even when he's sitting, but if his penis is tucked in properly that should not be the case.
So again, you may have to start following him into the bathroom to make sure he's doing it correctly until like my husband it becomes second nature to him.
Best wishes.

Happens when he is SITTING? I don't understand how that happens. Can you explain?
Is there any dementia involved here?

There are different styles of toilets, some have a shorter bowl, we have one that is a toilet for saving water.

My hubby makes more splashes in that one , are other one is regular flush, so we think it's the bowl size.

We are planning on buying another toilet and checking out sizes and depth and even shape. Project 200 😆

My husband is also 6"5

Maybe even have your husband urinate in a urinal and dump it in.

I'm wondering is he just doesn't like sitting down, and is careless , unconsciously on purpose.

Best of luck

Look up, True toilet, with urinal attachment. I was just googling and found that. Actually pretty good Idea.

There are also splash gards

Thank you! We have tried splash guards. And I have recently seen the urinal attachments. I’ll show my husband and see if he wants to try it.

Something is wrong if suddenly your husband (DH) cannot manage to get his urine into the bowl, even while sitting down. Get him to the PCP for a physical and bloodwork to check his numbers for sugar, and to ask about possible PT to strengthen his core and his muscles a bit. Has he been tested for Parkinson's? One easy test is here:

What is the two finger test for Parkinson's disease?

In finger tapping the patient is instructed to tap the index finger on the thumb as fast possible and as big as possible. This means that the patient should try to separate the two fingers as much as possible before tapping them. Make sure to test both the right and the left side.

If DH is unable to perform the finger tapping test, ask the doctor to check him out for possible Parkinson's Disease.

Here is a link to an Agingcare post in this very topics from 2019:

Wishing you the best of luck with a difficult situation.

Thank you. Getting him to the doctor is another struggle all of its own! 😉

Honestly, I think this is because hubs is attempting to stand. Sitting on the pot for most men is only for defecation, and he wants to affirm his masculinity.
