Rather than enemas, those should be last resort. Try any of these. (and not all at once!!!)
Stool Softeners. More gentle usually work over night.
There is Smooth Move Tea, herbal and is Senna based so like the stool softeners it may take a while but it is gentle.
Prunes and or Prune Juice
OTC products like Milk of Magnesia
This concoction suggested to me by the Hospice Team.
1/4 Cup Prune Juice
1/4 Cup Milk of Magnesia
1/4 Cup orange juice
briefly warmed to about body temperature.
This worked in about 30 to 60 minutes.

I also bought Pineapple and Papaya and pureed those and would give him about 1/2 cup as a fruit the high fiber did the job.

And you can buy Magnesium Citrate in a variety of flavors and this works very well. It can be tough on the body if you have kidney problems so check with the doctor first.

Suppositories are also an option

My Husband was a Veteran and the VA sent Lactulose and that worked well.

Plenty of water, moving around if that is possible will help.

I don't think enemas are recommended anymore. There are suppositories. There are mild laxatives, stool softeners, and bulk laxatives. Drinking more water and walking as exercise is good to. Cheese and banana's bind. Fruits and veggies everyday.

Your profile says you are a Vet. Call your county VA office and see what benefits ur able to get.

I've heard that grapes and/or blackberry enemas are even WORSE than coffee enemas! Avoid them at all costs!

Try drinking a small cup of apple cider daily. It's an old fashioned remedy that still works.
