My wife is in a rehabilitation facility following a fall that occurred a few weeks ago. My insurance and Medicare after a 20 day stay have reduced my responsibility from a cost of $20 dollars a day and now it is up to $203 per day for the next 100 days unless she recovers her strength and can be released back to our home.Any help will be greatly appreciated. Michael

You go to Social Services and talk to a Medicaid caseworker. I was told when Mom was in Rehab that if she could not pay the 50% after the 20 days, she could apply for Medicaid.

Hi Mike - the bubbles under your question are links, the medicaid one should give you some good information. I'm not American but from my time on the forum it seems a lot of people get help with the process from the facility they are living in... Hopefully someone else will be along soon to give you more detailed advice.

The application for Mediciad is only for long term care in a facility if she is not able to live independently after rehab.

You can appeal to Medicare and try and extend the eligibility. The rehab center should provide you with the number. Always use the phrase progressing slowly due to (insert whatever injury she suffered from fall). Also check with your insurance to see if there is a cap on annual expenses so you are not overpaying out of pocket for health care.

Also, highly suggest retaining an eldercare attorney that specializes in the Medicaid application process to help you sort out the financial aspects you will need to spend down for your wife to be eligible for Mediciad long term care. The cost of an attorney is worth every penney to best divide and protect the assets for you to remain in your home if your wife should need LTC.

If the facility your wife is in can't offer assistance, the Health and Human Services of your state will have the information and may have the applications you need online. If not, they will be able to help you on the phone as well.
