My mother is suffering from severe dementia and must be under watchful care 24 hours/day. She lives in a for-profit "memory care" facility which I cannot really afford.

No, Medicare wouldn't cover that. Medicaid might, or cover a similar facility. If you are paying for the facility now, I take it that your mother has no assets that could be used to pay for it -- ? Ask if the facility accepts Medicaid. If they do, they can probably help you apply for it. If not, start looking for a place that does accept it, and start the application process.

I contacted Medicare and was advised Memory Care and Assisted Living facilities are not covered. If your mom qualifies, Medicaid does cover some facilities for memory care/alzheimer's/assisted living/ but many of the for profit facilities do not accept Medicaid. Hope this helps.
