My mom needs to go into a nursing home soon. She will end up being cremated and the only people she knows is a few family members where she recently moved to. So basically she will not have a service. She has quite a bit of money in her savings account, so I need to keep some money back to pay for the cremation so Medicaid doesn't reject it during the 5 year look back period. We can't afford to see a lawyer to get a trust and the cost of a simple cremation will only be a couple of thousand dollars. Will just prepaying be acceptable to Medicaid and will that keep her from being penalized during the look back period? Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for your answer. When I search Google, it always talks about how you need a lawyer and you have to get a trust. So this isn't necessary?

For a prepaid funeral, all you need is a Funeral Director. It should be a Medicaid trust. There maybe a limit. The beneficiary is the Funeral Home. Any money left over, goes to Medicaid. When you apply for Medicaid you present that trust. I cashed in Moms life insurance and used the proceeds to prepay her funeral.
