Since my mom's been in nursing care (for a couple months) I've noticed that she is often in a wheelchair. It's a basic wheelchair and over the course of several months she's developed back pain. If the nursing home is going to keep putting her in a wheelchair and leaving her there (otherwise they take good care of her) what can I do to make the wheelchair more comfortable. What sort of cushions are best to add? Is there a better wheelchair to get? I'm looking for things I can add in to make her experience better.
Her issues are Parkinson's, incontinence and blindness.

You need to ask that they put cushions in her chair. There are also Geri chairs made to be more comfortable than a wheel chair.

See about getting a Physical Therapist evaluation and/or Occupational Therapy evaluation for mom. They are the best sources for wheelchair info out there. Considering there are literally thousands of 'cushions' available for wheelchairs, it truly depends on your mother's situation as to which one/type would benefit HER the most. My mother had the PT and OT evaluate her for cushions and wound up with a specific type of gel cushion that worked quite well for her (she was wheelchair bound entirely). Then we got her wheelchair switched out too b/c the standard Medicare one was too short for her stature. Again, the PT/OTs are the best to help you figure this out. At the SNF mom was at for rehab, they had PTs and OTs on staff full time; they were wonderful.

Good luck!

check out Roho seat cushions for wheelchairs on Amazon. Expensive but well worth the cost. I'm in a wheelchair. My Physical Therapist measured and weighed me and recommended the wheelchair I purchased and also the Roho cushion.

Roho's cost at least $400 and I would be leary leaving them at a NH. When I worked, one of my jobs was manning the durable equipment loan closet. A Roho was donated to us complete with the pump in the box it came in. The first time we loaned it out we did not get it back. We loaned another to my Uncle and he loved it and Aunt returned it after his death.

I like this but not sure how supporting it would be.
