I am a 72-year-old U.S. veteran looking for help in paying my expenses at an independent care facility, Champlin Shores in Champlin, MN. My wife is currently in a different nursing home. Champlin Shores has a memory care facility in the same building and I would like to get my wife moved there, so we can be in the same building.

Another resource for you, contact your aged and disability county office. They may have insight for you.

contact your local VA County office, and make an appointment. I used my county VA office and was the best resource. They helped me make the application for aide and attendance for my mom.

I would do this first thing, and get the ball rolling.. I wish you blessings …

If you are 72 then ur a Nam vet? If so, you may qualify for Aid and Attendance but you must have been in the service during wartime. If Medicaid is paying towards you wifes care then she cannot receive A&A. If she is on Medicaid are you being considered the Community Spouse? By being the CS you should be getting enough or all of your monthly for your expenses.

MCs are private pay. Even if being in one qualified your wife for A&A, its not enough to cover the cost of MC. MCs are only a step up from an AL. There comes a time that they can no longer care for a resident so a NH is needed.

Call your County VA office. Make an appt to see them or ask to have them to visit you. Have your military records available. They will go thru what you and your wife qualify for.

Oh, wow, this sounds like a tough situation to get done. I can't even begin to imagine it being possible. I wonder if you have access to a social worker for your own case?? Would it make sense to speak with him or her and see if there is any way to get the two of you into the same facility so that you could at least visit with one another?
ALF and memory care is almost always self pay and it is very expensive. The expense for two I can't quite imagine and you really don't need that care. There are some facilities that have cottages with different levels of care needs and that would be ideal, but I can't imagine getting access to it without a good deal of saved wealth, which is hardly the norm for ANY of us.
I hope you will update us if anyone at VA or anyone else has any ideas for you.
Best of luck.
