My MIL is progressing to late-stage Alzheimer's. Up until now, one caregiver was able to bathe her without my MIL needing supplemental oxygen. Now she is starting to have difficulty remaining upright and can't follow simple commands; she does the "melt" and the caregiver has to catch her and get her back on the shower chair. Her oxygen levels drop without the supplement. So the caregivers would like to pair up to shower my MIL. The issue is that the bathroom/shower is really not set up for this in terms of space. My feeling is that even with two people, not only can my MIL go down, but the caregivers could get injured as well.
I think it's time for bed bathing, or edge of bed bathing and have recommended they trial this with two people.
Has anyone had to make the decision to stop showers as part of safety when their LO declined?
