Brought my 78 year old sister to Florida from NY nursing facility about 3 yrs. ago when rest of family did not want to deal with her. Found out she was a hoarder among other medical issues. Got POA and found her a nursing facility to treat her medical issues because spouse and I did not have the abilities to do so. We visit her about once a month and ensure all her needs are taken care of and I get periodic calls from facility on her progress or degrees. It was not easy at first because no one likes to have to commit a relative for any reason but as time went on she became ok with it and continues to be as well as can be. She has Social Security and Medicaid and Medicare which covers most of what she does. There is no other income so we deal with it. Yes I can relate to what many of you have to say and welcome with any questions I can help to answer.

Panda, so glad to hear you were able to make choices that did not involve a level of caregiving that was unrealistic for you and your spouse to sustain long-term. So many here, understandably, are stuck in crisis mode.

Welcome to the forum! 😊

I am not a professional medical person but i have learned a little about human nature when it comes to us older folks (i am 77) and not really having any notion as to what we will do when the time comes to admit that we are not invincible. Many of our assisted living and nursing facilities are no longer taking people with only Medicaid and Medicare which i guess is reasonable as they have to make a buck where they can. The lower cost places are becoming familiar to me and i have found that many of them try to do their best for their residents.
